This original design came about as a result of mistakes made during the production of a couple bird houses. The pieces were saved and just by accident, put together in this form. It goes to show that out of a mistake, beautiful things, such as this "URN" bird feeder, can become a functional piece of art work, where neither time nor material is wasted.

Within 15 minutes after putting the URN outdoors, my birds were busily eating from the feeder. It's quite hilarious to watch 3 Doves eating around the perimeter while another, perched on the peak, tries to run all the others off. With little success, I might add.

The design is based on the Hexagon. Two hexagonal forms put together in this manner make a very strong and stable structure as well as a very attractive form. It takes more than 5 pounds of pressure on the rim to topple it over. However, because of the light weight of the URN, it can be moved laterally by the birds or squirrels. So, if it is to be placed on a table or post, or fence, it should be secured to the base upon which it is placed.

The smallest URN, shown here, will hold 3 cups of Black Oil Sunflower seed. The largest size will hold up to 10 cups Black Oil Sunflower seed. It will of course hold more of the smaller seeds or a mixture of seeds.

Water drains very well from the bowl due to a fabric lining in the bottom of the bowl. The fabric prevents smaller seed from clogging the drainage system but allows water to freely drain through. Birds will eat from it even when it is raining.

Like each birdhouse, the URN Bird Feeder is hand-crafted from salvaged and recycled Western Red Cedar, naturally weathered, 8 to 10 years. All other materials are recycled or salvaged from various locations.
